How the number is made
- The window. Snow Day looks at 18:00 tonight through 9 AM tomorrow. Snow that falls during the 4–9 AM bus run counts far more than snow that stopped at midnight, because plows get ahead of the early stuff.
- The drivers. Overnight snow (corrected for temperature, because cold, fluffy snow piles up faster than the raw forecast says), freezing rain and ice weighted by when they hit, rain that turns into a flash freeze, snow during school hours, and extreme cold if your board has a wind-chill policy.
- The conditions. Feels-like temperature and blowing snow (gusts plus loose snow) push the number up or down.
- The alerts. An active Snowfall Warning, Winter Storm Warning or Blizzard Warning sets a floor. A heat warning or frost advisory does nothing.
- Your board. Your tolerance setting moves the whole curve. Cancels easily? 4 cm is a coin flip. Rarely cancels? It takes 18.
